About

I’m Christy Blalock, a professional artist from southwest Louisiana. I was labeled “artsy” and creative as a child, and art has always been my way of understanding the world. That passion started early, and I carried it forward to McNeese State University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Art Education. Later, I completed a master’s degree in School Counseling. My career in Calcasieu Parish Schools spanned more than two decades — **16 years as an art teacher** and **seven years as a school counselor**. In both roles, I loved helping others find their creative voice and their sense of calm. After retiring from the school system, I stepped fully into my lifelong dream of becoming a full-time, professional artist. After walking through a difficult cancer journey, I chose to live differently — to fill my days only with what feels meaningful and true. Today, I create elegant, one-of-a-kind works by layering textures and plasters with my own custom blends of oils and acrylics. This approach produces a bas-relief effect that builds depth, movement, and a quiet, immersive atmosphere. Through a ten-layer process that is entirely my own, I continue to refine my technique to bring a unique sense of originality and richness to every piece. Meaning is at the heart of everything I create. I like to include a quiet “hidden message” in each painting — something from my soul. The best way for me to express myself with tact and feeling is through my art; it’s how I show what’s in my spirit that I believe the world needs to see. I believe art can heal, and everyone’s home should reflect something that adds joy to daily life. My inspiration comes from the world around me — I’m constantly looking up, looking for the birds. Birds in a nest, on a wire, in flight, or strutting their stuff feel like “Godwinks” to me, and I love sharing that special feeling through my work. I’m also inspired by the people around me — my family, friends, support system, and community.

Artist Statement

My name is Christy Blalock, and I am a Louisiana artist with a deep love for mixed media. I create layered, relief-textured artworks that incorporate various materials with layers of paint and plasters to produce rich, tactile surfaces. The heart of my work lies in the natural beauty and cultural essence of Southwest Louisiana. Though I don’t strive for realism, my pieces are abstract expressions of local wildlife and landscapes, allowing viewers to interpret and connect with them in their own ways. I favor a calm and soothing color palette, hoping to provide a sense of peace and refuge to anyone who views my art. I intend to create a safe space from the chaos outside, where the eye and mind can rest. Art, for me, is both a creative and regenerative process. I love creating art you can feel with your eyes, your hands, and your heart. I hope my work offers each viewer a moment of calm, a spark of joy, and a reminder of the resilience and beauty that can be found all around us. I welcome viewers to touch my works with respect in order to feel with their eyes and their hands. The environment is also very important to me, I have discovered a way to reuse old house paint, old canvases, frames, etc. and give something that was meant for a landfill a new life.
